ChatterBox FRS Multisport Communicator Kit - Open Face/-- Review

My best friend and I have been using these for years. Since the first trip, we've never done an overnighter without them. A pair of these makes riding safer (hey, you're throwing up some grit - guess the road isn't as clean as it looks), more convenient (feel like a burger, or would you rather do Mexican? Can you get another 30 miles before you need gas?), and more fun (Was that a yak? I think so; let's go back and check!).

A fresh battery will last a full day of riding. Once they've been few a few hundred cycles, you'll need two to get through a day, but the batteries aren't expensive. I don't know if I'd say the sound is 'crystal clear,' but as long as your speeds are reasonable and you're using a full face helmet, the sound is clear enough to convey sarcasm, inflections, etc. The voice activation works well; it's all we ever use. I could probably find the push to talk button if I looked, but I've never used it. It does take some adjustment to get the VOX set right, but after a few rides it will be second nature.

There are other systems with more channels. We've never wanted more than the two this system gives you. We ride out west, and stay the heck away from cities, so I don't know what it might be like in more urbanized areas.

If you have an HJC helmet, the system will mount right up on the helmet. My friend hasn't had his off the helmet in years. I haven't had an HJC since we started using these (an error I'll remedy when I get sick of this Shoei, which I find highly overrated), so I made an arm strap for mine. The more significant advantage of the HJC helmet is the speaker cavities built into the foam. His never come out. Mine only go in when I know we'll be using these radios, and a solid day is enough to reduce my ears to hamburger. Not fun. That's the main reason I didn't give it 5 stars. Thinner speakers would be nice. Despite the pain it causes me, it's still worth it. I guess that should tell you everything you need to know right there.
