This is not your typical oil filter and this is a review of CM filters in general since their construction is similar. I have had a CM filter in constant use now for over eight years. In contrast to normal oil filters that should be changed along with the oil, a CM filter can last years and all that needs to be done is to change the filter element. Every 4th use, a new set of gaskets is recommended. When I first disassembled my filter after nearly four years, everything looked practically brand new so I replaced the filter element and put it back together again for another 3.5 years of additional use. The only reason I changed the filter element was to show people how clean the filter was after using Synlube for four years.

The filter media is hard-formed, not a loosely pleated paper. Some filters have a string tied around the media to keep the media in place and that's definitely not confidence inspiring. As such it holds up for much longer even against the oil surges of powerful engines and thicker oils. The filters come in two sizes for in-line filters, 6 & 9". Spin-on filters come in 4.25 and 6.25" filters. I use the 6.25" filter because there's plenty of room for it on my Ranger. For the spin-on filters, the max flow rate is 15 and 45 GPM for the 4.25 and 6.25" filters respectively. The oil flow rate and the total filter area are so great that a bypass valve is not required. The filter element is good down to 8 microns compared to 20-40 microns for conventional disposables. Only an oil bypass system has more filtering ability.

People who look at their cars as appliances couldn't care less about something like a CM filter but for those of us who really care about our rides, a CM filter is a very worthy investment. Over the eight years I've had my Ranger, the filter has allowed to avoid the expense of about 10 conventional filters and that's 10 less filters in our landfill plus the peace of mind provided by an entirely superior product. There is also some reason to believe that it saves a bit of gas since the work the engine has to do to pump oil is reduced.
